We are heartbroken and miss Julie terribly. We are devastated that she will not be here to be a grandma. Last Saturday morning, the last time we talked with her, she looked right us and told us to have a wonderful life--and that is what we intend to do in her honor.

Independence – Julie Beth Brown, 62 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. She was born on August 12, 1949, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Paul Edwin and Donna Mae (Pierce) Jones. She graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1967 and then earned a B.A. degree in Art Education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. On February 10, 1979, she and Martin Richard Brown were married at the First United Methodist Church in Independence. Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Chapter BD P.E.O., and her weekly Bridge Club. She had a passion for interior design and a talent for working with colors. She enjoyed flower gardening and visits to Walt Disney World. Also, the evening meal with her family was always an event. She planned menus days or weeks in advance and everyone was expected to be home at the appointed hour. She also was an enthusiastic travel planner for her family. And finally, she was really looking forward to being a grandmother this summer.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, Marty, her children, Rob and Sally Brown of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Ryan Brown of Independence, Iowa, her parents, Donna and Paul Jones of Independence, Iowa, 1 sister, Laurie (Mark) Rohlfing of Nevada, Iowa, and 1 brother, Brad (Susan) Jones of Ankeny, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Lindsey.
